Breastfeeding Products

After making the choice to breastfeed, there will be few more items you are going to need other than a nursing necklace. Of course, we hope that you will also add a nursing necklace to your list of must-haves. We also found it valuable to include a list of other items that will help you as a nursing mother. Research all options to make sure you find the best product that suits both you and your baby!

Thinking of putting together a breastfeeding basket for a baby shower gift? The list below is a great starting point for the perfect breastfeeding gift basket. Support a breastfeeding moms efforts with a basket packed with some of the following necessities - she will love it and what a great way to encourage her efforts!

  • Breast Pump & Milk Storage - Having a good breastpump is better than saving a few dollars on one that may not be as comfortable. An uncomfortable pump or improper use, can yield low results and lead to frustration. Our personal recommendation is the Medela Pump In Style (PIS) which is both affordable and easy to use. A manual pump is usually not recommended if you plan to pump regularly. You may also want to read "Before You Buy a Breast Pump."

  • My Brest Friend Pillow - Nursing a newborn can be tiring and hard on your body. It takes some time to discover what positions work and don't work for you and your baby. My Brest Friend Pillow can help you relax and comfortably situate your nursling into the best position for nursing.

  • Nursing Bras - They easily unsnap or unlatch to allow easier access for feedings. In the first weeks, your breast may be more sensitive and sore than usual. Having a soft, lightweight nursing bra is fabulous to begin with as your breast are "toughening" up. After the first weeks have passed and your wanting to feel more like your sexy self again, their are many great nursing bras that are comfortable, functional, and sexy. Do your research. There are many bras out there that are fashionable as well as comfortable.

  • Breast Pads - Your going to need them and this time they won't be lining your bra to give you that extra "boost"! As your body gets use to producing the "right" amount, you may have some leakage from overproduction. Breast Pads prevent embarrassing leaks and they keep you dry in the process. Washable breast pads are also any option. Both comfortable and functional, they are a smart choice for the environment.

  • Swaddling Blanket - Swaddling is an ancient technique used to snugly wrap baby to remind them of the tight-fitting environment of the womb. Swaddling my daughter helped me achieve the an optimal breastfeeding position and also drastically calmed her down so we could nurse easier. Something to look for in a good swaddling blanket is stretchy, lightweight and breathable material. If baby is acting too fussy to nurse, try swaddling, it may be your ticket to happiness.

  • Prenatal Vitamins - Continue to take them! If you have ran out of prenatal vitamins during your pregnancy, get more. Breastfeeding takes a tremendous amount of nutrients from your body. Make sure you are taking care of yourself as well as baby and continue to take your vitamins!

  • Soothe and Heal Moisturizer - There may be some discomfort as your body "toughens up" to breastfeeding. Lansinoh's moisturizers will help you heal and feel more comfortable as your body adjusts to its new and amazing job.

  • Nursing Bottles - If you decide to pump or have to return to work, you are going to need a great set of bottles. Remember, don't introduce the bottle too early - talk to a local lactation consultant if you aren't sure when it is the right time to introduce a bottle. There is a right time and method to introducing a nursing baby to a bottle so that is does not hinder your milk supply or cause nipple confusion. Each baby is unique - it may take you a few times before you find the "perfect" bottle. The most popular bottles are Avent, Platex, and Dr. Brown's. There are also bottles specifically designed for breastfed babies such as the Second Nature Feeding System.

  • Sling or Pouch - A sling is a lifesaver! A sling snuggles your little one into you reminding them of the womb and relaxing them with the sounds of your heartbeat and voice as well as the gentle swaying of your movement. Your baby feels your warmth, your motion, and your voice. During baby's first weeks, this attached carrying method may be just the security baby needs to make his transition from the womb to the outside world. After a little practice, slings are also great for breastfeeding (especially in public). Slings can be used all throughout your little ones life and is a great way to carry your toddler later!

  • Nursing or Breastfeeding Necklace - It will be hard to picture you little angel moving nonstop when they sleep so much as a newborn and seem so peacefully attached to the breast. However, as your baby developes his newly discovered fingers his fine motor skills will undoubtedly improve. Once baby has been enlightened with this new gift of seeing the "real world" he will want to look around at everything and be fascinated by Mommy's body parts and jewelry. Encourage baby to play with something other that mommy and prevent distraction with a nursing necklace! Of course, we couldn't say enough about the added advantages of both tactile and vision-development also!

Recommended Breastfeeding Readings

Once you have purchased all the necessary items you think you will need. We also suggest doing some reading. Knowledge is the most powerful tool you have. If this is your first time breastfeeding, you may ask yourself questions such as: "Is baby getting enough milk?", "How do I know if he is latched correctly?", "How many times should my baby nurse each day?", and there will be many more! Having the right information and knowledge of breastfeeding will make you more confident and in return form a more secure and long-lasting nursing relationship. Purchasing a video might be a good idea if you are more visual and would like to see real-life demonstrations. As always, contact your pediatrician if you have any concerns and contact a Lactation Consultant if you are needing in-depth guidance.
